The rectangular museum case in my first sketch was replaced by a bell jar, which sat better in the overall cover design.
The non-availability of Dodo photos necessitated a bit of invention. Using some superbly detailed contemporary engravings as a guide, I constructed this Dodo head using elements of Eagle, turkey vulture, pelican and a number of other distant cousins, and a lot of digital manipulation. The figure in the tux is my own. Some of the plants featured are from my own garden - others are from photos taken by my daughter Xaali in Ecuador.
