Growing old disgracefully

The Economist asked for a cover to mark the EU's 60th birthday. Cake in the rain was the starting point, though we worked on two versions, with and without rain.

The rainy version below had its own charms, but in the end the dry version was chosen, which makes sense when seen with the slightly more positive headline.

I also did the EU's 50th birthday cover a decade ago. I don't think anyone thought the 'mid life crisis' referred to in that cover would escalate to the potential break-up of the union threatened by Brexit.
